Stop motion product videos your customers will watch

Twelve ideas for small businesses and creators, and how to shoot them in a single take.

Why a stop motion product video works

A photo shows your product. A stop motion product video shows it moving, building and arriving, with a handmade feel that stands out between slick ads on TikTok, Reels and Shorts. You don't need a studio. A phone, a stand, some paper for a backdrop and a lamp will do.

The catch has always been the shooting. Every frame means move, step back, tap, repeat, and a 15-second clip is hundreds of taps. Unhanded replaces the tapping with one continuous take: you keep animating and it keeps the clean frame of every pose.

Stop motion product video ideas

Pick one, shoot it in an afternoon, then make the next one a variation.

  1. The buildStart with an empty table and add the parts of your product one by one until it is whole. Works for anything that comes in components: furniture, kits, gadgets, meal boxes.
  2. The arrivalLet the product slide, hop or spin into frame from off-screen, one small move per pose. A two-second entrance is a 24-pose job.
  3. Ingredients to finishedStack, sprinkle and assemble the ingredients of a food, candle or skincare product, ending on the finished item.
  4. The colour runSwap the same product through every colour or flavour you make, each popping in place of the last. Good for variants that are hard to compare in a photo.
  5. The unboxing in reverseStart with the product on the table and let the packaging fold itself around it, or the other way round.
  6. Price tag, built from thingsSpell the price, the discount code or the product name using small objects from your own range: beads, buttons, packaging scraps.
  7. The size line-upArrange sizes from smallest to largest, one stepping into place at a time, with a plain label for each.
  8. The behind-the-scenesShow your making process in a few poses: raw materials, half-made, finished. Handmade goods suit this best.
  9. Before and afterA stained board becoming clean, a messy drawer becoming organised. Shoot the whole transformation as a take and keep a pose for each stage.
  10. The countdownBuild the numbers 3, 2, 1 out of the product itself, then reveal the launch or sale date.
  11. A tiny dioramaPut your product in a miniature scene: a mug on a cardboard mountain, shoes on a paper-cut path. People stop scrolling for tiny worlds.
  12. Your logo, builtEnd on your logo assembled from real objects, the same trick as our own dotted hand mark.

How many poses is a video?

On twos, a 24 fps video uses 12 poses a second. A 15-second clip is about 180 poses, and a 30-second clip is about 360. Many of those can be tiny moves, so a lot of the clip is just the product sliding a few millimetres per pose.

Shoot it in one take

  1. Frame it vertically. Shoot 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, and keep the product away from the top and bottom edges where the apps put their buttons and captions.
  2. Fix the phone. Use a stand or tripod and don't touch the phone once you start. Even a small bump ruins a pose.
  3. Light it steadily. One or two lamps, no window light that might change. If the light drifts, you get flicker.
  4. Press record once, then animate. Move the product a little, take your hands out, pause for a beat, repeat. The pause is what Unhanded looks for, so count one-two in your head.
  5. Let Unhanded pick the poses. Review the strip, switch any pose in or out, and export.

New to this? Here's how hand removal actually works.

What you need, and what it costs

The free version of Unhanded exports 1080p video with a small unhanded.app watermark in the corner. For client or brand posts, Pro ($14.99 once, $9.99 for the first 30 days after launch) removes it and adds 4K, per-pose timing and reordering, live onion skin, audio, GIF export, green screen, speech bubbles that follow the product, voice-over and sound effects. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
