A stop motion app for iPhone that takes your hands out.

Animate with both hands. Record one continuous take, move things around as you like, and Unhanded keeps one clean frame per pose. No tapping a shutter between moves.

Real footage goes here before launch: a raw take with hands everywhere, next to the clean 24 fps result. We won't mock it up.

How it works

Record once. Keep the poses.

  1. Record one take

Put your phone on a stand and press record once. Then animate: nudge the clay, move the toy, slide the product. Your hands can come and go as they please.

  2. We find the poses

Unhanded watches for the moments when the scene sits still with no hands in it. Each one becomes a pose. Frames with hands, arms, shadows and wobble are dropped. All of it happens on your phone.

  3. Export at 24 fps

The poses land on a 24 fps timeline, each held for one or two frames. Save it, share it, post it. See the detail.

What's in it

Then make it yours.

Once the hands are gone, the poses are yours to dress up: words, faces, sound and a look.

  • Shoot steady

Manual exposure, white balance and focus that lock when you hit record. Draw a path guide with eased tick marks that follow your pose count, or lay a reference photo over the camera.

  • Say something

Captions and titles, plus speech, thought and shout bubbles that follow a moving toy from pose to pose.

  • Give it a face

Eyes and mouths that sit on a figure's head, follow it, change expression per pose, blink and talk.

  • Make some noise

Record a voice-over over playback and the mouth moves with your voice. Drop sound effects on any pose.

  • Pick a look

Film, Warm, Cool, Mono, Vintage and Comic, with brightness, contrast and saturation. Loop a section while you fine-tune.

  • Share it your way

Video, GIF, a looping sticker, or a printable flipbook PDF with cut marks.

  • Plan it first Plus

Describe an idea and get a storyboard: shots, pose counts, props, set notes, sounds and bubbles. Shoot from it with cue cards on the camera.

Questions

Good questions

Is Unhanded on the App Store?

Not yet. Right now there is only a waitlist, and you'll get one email on launch day. We'll link the App Store listing here when it's live.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad. There is no Android or desktop version, and none is planned for launch.

How do you remove hands from the video?

You record one continuous take. Unhanded looks for the moments when the scene sits still with no hands in it, keeps the sharpest frame of each one, and drops everything else. The details are on the how it works page.

Does it work with gloves, or with a hand that's half in frame?

That is exactly what we are testing hardest before launch: different hands, gloves and lighting. Hand detection alone misses partial and blurred hands, so Unhanded also watches for motion and shadows. We won't claim it works in every situation until the footage backs it up.

Do I need an account, and where does my footage go?

No account. Your footage never leaves your phone: all the analysis and editing runs on the device. The one exception is storyboards: when you ask for one, your idea text and an optional props photo are sent to write it, and aren't kept. See the privacy page.

What does the free version include?

Unlimited takes, automatic hand removal, 1080p export, ones or twos, captions and titles, manual camera controls, the Film look, loop preview, flipbook PDFs and stickers. Exports carry a small unhanded.app watermark in the corner.

What does Pro cost, and is it a subscription?

Pro is a one-time $14.99 purchase, with a $9.99 launch price for the first 30 days. It isn't a subscription, and it's yours for good. It removes the watermark and adds 4K export, per-pose timing and reordering, live onion skin, audio, GIF export, green screen, speech bubbles that follow, Faces, the path guide, voice-over with lip-sync, sound effects and five more looks.

What is Unhanded Plus?

An optional subscription for storyboards: $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year. Describe an idea, optionally add a photo of your props, and get a shot list with pose counts, props, set notes, sounds and bubbles, which you can revise shot by shot and shoot from with cue cards. It includes 40 storyboards a month and everything in Pro. It's a subscription because each storyboard costs us money to write; nothing else in Unhanded is.

How is it different from Stop Motion Studio?

Stop Motion Studio runs on more platforms, has rotoscoping, DSLR support and a bigger audio library, and costs less. Unhanded does one thing differently: you don't tap a shutter button for every frame. Here is the honest comparison.

Can I use it for product videos?

Yes, it's built for them. Small businesses and creators can shoot a stop motion product video in one take. Browse product video ideas.
